America’s Largest Agencies: When Is It Time for them to Sunset?

Below is an updated list of 20 of America’s largest organizations, including the SEC (SECURITIES AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION), which your hard-earned tax dollars go to support to the tune of BILLIONS of dollars each a year. I have listed what they claim to do for the American people, along with their operating budgets for 2023, and their original operating budget at inception (adjusted for inflation) based on available public data. I’ve sourced this information from official government websites, budget documents, and reliable public records where possible using Grok’s help. Note that some budget figures are approximations or reflect discretionary budgets, as total operating budgets can include mandatory spending, discretionary funding, and other allocations. I ask the question, and I hope you will to: How are these agencies helping (or hurting) America?

Securities and Exchange Commission

@DOGE_SEC Securities and Exchange Commission
Claim: Protects investors, maintains fair, orderly, and efficient markets, and facilitates capital formation.
Budget: $2.59 billion (2023, as proposed)
Founded: 1934, under President Franklin D. Roosevelt
Original Budget: Estimated at $1 million
Adjusted to 2025: Approximately $22 million
Question: Is the SEC really policing financial markets to prevent fraud and ensure transparency, or is there clear bias in what they have done?

Four Examples of an unjust SEC:

  1. October 2018 – Elon Stands Up to SEC Overreach
    On October 4, 2018, just days after settling with the SEC over his Tesla “420” post, Elon took to X/Twitter with a brilliant jab, calling them the “Shortseller Enrichment Commission.” I see this as Elon refusing to bow to a system that punishes brilliant ideas. The SEC had hammered him with a $20 million fine each for him and Tesla over his “funding secured” vision—yet here he was, pushing back against an agency that seems to favor Wall Street over innovators like him who are pushing humanity forward.
  2. December 2018 – Elon on 60 Minutes
    In a 60 Minutes interview on December 9, 2018, Elon didn’t hold back, saying, “I do not respect the SEC. I respect the justice system.” I admire his genuine honesty—he laid bare how the SEC forced him into a settlement, likening it to “a gun to your child’s head” because banks threatened Tesla’s lifeline. As someone who knows Elon, it’s heartbreaking to see a genius like him cornered by bureaucrats who don’t grasp his drive to save humanity.
  3. February 2022 – Relentless Harassment of Elon Musk
    On February 17, 2022, Elon and Tesla called out the SEC’s “unrelenting” harassment in a letter to a federal judge. I stand by him here—the agency’s endless subpoenas, like the one over his Tesla stock poll, feel like retaliation for his opinions and his voice. Knowing Elon, it’s inspiring to see him resist a regulator that seems determined to bog down a man whose companies, including SpaceX, benefit humanity immensely.
  4. December 2024 – Defending His Vision Against a Weaponized SEC
    On December 12, 2024, Elon posted on X that the SEC is “just another weaponized institution doing political dirty work.” I trust his judgment—this came after he rejected a settlement over his X/Twitter buy, with the agency hounding him for years. As his friend, I see how they even tried to punish him for prioritizing SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn launch over their petty testimony demands in September. It’s clear Elon’s a target because he is a threat to the current system where bureaucrats make the rules, and then the law enforces them.

Small Business Administration

@DOGE_SBA Small Business Administration
Claim: Helps Americans start, grow, and sustain small businesses through loans, grants, and counseling.
Budget: $1.2 billion (2023)
Founded: 1953, under President Dwight D. Eisenhower
Original Budget: Minimal, likely in the millions
Adjusted to 2025: Tens of millions
Question: Are the SBA’s programs effectively reaching and supporting the small businesses with the most merit?

Department of State

@DOGE_STATE Department of State
Claim: Shapes U.S. foreign policy to promote American national security, economic prosperity, and democratic values.
Budget: $60.8 billion (2023)
Founded: 1789, under President George Washington
Original Budget: In the low thousands
Adjusted to 2025: A few million dollars
Question: Is the State Department’s allocation of diplomatic resources and aid truly advancing U.S. interests, or are there significant misalignments or geopolitical missteps?

General Services Administration

@DOGE_GSA General Services Administration
Claim: Provides real estate, acquisition, and technology services to support federal agencies and save taxpayers money.
Budget: $34.8 billion (2023, total obligations across its funds)
Founded: 1949, under President Harry S. Truman
Original Budget: Not well-documented, likely part of broader federal administrative budgets
Adjusted to 2025: Hundreds of millions
Question: Does the GSA still need to exist?

Department of Housing and Urban Development

@DOGE_HUD Department of Housing and Urban Development
Claim: Ensures Americans have access to affordable housing and strengthens communities through housing assistance and development programs.
Budget: $68.7 billion (2023)
Founded: 1965, under President Lyndon B. Johnson
Original Budget: $734 million
Adjusted to 2025: Approximately $6.5 billion
Question: Are HUD’s housing programs effectively reducing homelessness for American people and Veterans and improving housing quality, or do they perpetuate dependency without sustainable outcomes?

National Park Service

@DOGE_NPS National Park Service
Claim: Preserves America’s natural and cultural heritage for public enjoyment and education through national parks and historic sites.
Budget: $3.2 billion (2023)
Founded: 1916, under President Woodrow Wilson
Original Budget: $165,000
Adjusted to 2025: Roughly $4.5 million
Question: Is the NPS managing its resources sustainably, or are parks deteriorating despite a huge budget of 3.2 billion?

Office of Management and Budget

@DOGE_OMB Office of Management and Budget
Claim: Claims to assist the President in managing federal spending to ensure efficient use of taxpayer dollars for the American public.
Budget: $128 million (2023)
Founded: 1921, under President Warren G. Harding
Original Budget: Tens of thousands
Adjusted to 2025: In the millions
Question: Does the OMB need to exist, given it started in 1921? Isn’t DOGE going to sunset in 17 months? When will this agency sunset (end)?

Department of Education

@DOGE_ED Department of Education
Claim: Claims to promote student achievement and prepares Americans for global competitiveness by supporting education at all levels.
Budget: $79.6 billion (2023)
Founded: 1980, under President Jimmy Carter
Original Budget: $14.5 billion
Adjusted to 2025: Approximately $50 billion
Question: Why have the DOE’s initiatives not improved educational outcomes? American kids are ranking lowest in the world in core subjects, while schools teach on diversity and equity instead. This agency has a huge bureaucracy that it maintains and has been finding anti-Americanism, and, as Elon Musk pointed out, “gender nonsense and anti-meritocratic racism.”

The Department of Education has been burning through taxpayer money on contracts that have nothing to do with improving student outcomes. They spent $4.6 million just to coordinate Zoom and in-person meetings, $3 million on a report that concluded prior reports weren’t even used, and $1.4 million to physically observe mailing and clerical operations. Instead of fixing schools, they’re funding pointless bureaucracy. Source: @Doge

Dept. of Education abuse of taxpayer money.
Dept. of Education abuse of taxpayer money.

Office of Personnel Management

@DOGE_OPM Office of Personnel Management
Claim: Manages the federal workforce to ensure government employees serve the American people effectively and efficiently.
Budget: $413 million (2023)
Founded: 1978, under President Jimmy Carter
Original Budget: Not precisely known, part of broader federal personnel budget
Adjusted to 2025: Likely in the hundreds of millions
Question: Is OPM ensuring that the federal workforce is merit-based and efficient, or are there issues of bureaucratic bloat and poor performance management? Also, does America really NEED an “OPM?” I can assure you that when the team working DOGE at the federal level were hired, they did not need to go through the OPM.

Department of Justice

@DOGE_DOJ Department of Justice
Claim: Upholds the rule of law and ensures public safety by enforcing federal laws and protecting Americans’ rights.
Budget: $37.5 billion (2023)
Founded: 1870, under President Ulysses S. Grant
Original Budget: $500,000
Adjusted to 2025: Roughly $12 million
Question: The DOJ started very very small in 1870. It has ballooned out and recently it illogically sued SpaceX for not hiring political asylees for other countries when SpaceX clearly works with NASA and the government on sensitive national security issues everyday. Also, wasting taxpayer money, the DOJ and the SEC did a “probe” to see if Elon was building a large glass house. It was a waste of taxpayer money and it was a nothing burger as Elon was not building a glass house and never planned to.

Federal Aviation Administration

@DOGE_FAA Federal Aviation Administration
Claim: Ensures the safety and efficiency of the U.S. aviation system for the traveling public and economic benefit.
Budget: $18.6 billion (2023)
Founded: 1958, under President Dwight D. Eisenhower
Original Budget: $225 million
Adjusted to 2025: Approximately $2.2 billion
Question: Why didn’t the FAA keep pace with technological advancements and safety standards, and why are there gaps that compromise air travel safety or efficiency? For an 18 Billion budget, why are there still plane crashes and near misses? Now, with a new FAA, the agency has brought in the finest experts in aviation travel, and they discovered that they water using a WW2 era traffic control system. For 18 Billion a year. This goes to show that money cannot fix problems. It is the reality of highly sought after merit based hiring that solves problems. The FAA will do better under Sean Duffy.

SpaceX letter to Congress. The @FAANews
leadership spends their resources attacking @SpaceX
for petty matters that have nothing to do with safety, while neglecting real safety issues at Boeing.
This is deeply wrong and puts human lives at risk.
NASA deemed the Boeing capsule unsafe for astronaut return, turning, out of necessity, to SpaceX, yet instead of fining Boeing for putting astronauts at risk, the FAA is fining SpaceX for trivia!

Elon Musk

Statement from SpaceX: “For nearly two years, SpaceX has voiced its concerns with the FAA’s inability to keep pace with the commercial spaceflight industry. It is clear that the Agency lacks the resources to timely review licensing materials, but also focuses its limited resources on areas unrelated to public safety. These distractions continue to directly threaten national priorities and undercut American industry’s ability to innovate.”

Social Security Administration

@DOGE_SSA Social Security Administration
Claim: Claims to provide financial security to Americans through retirement, disability, and survivor benefits.
Budget: $14.2 billion (2023, administrative budget; total outlays exceed $1.3 trillion)
Founded: 1935, under President Franklin D. Roosevelt
Original Budget: Not clearly delineated, benefits totaled $1.3 million
Adjusted to 2025: Administrative costs in the hundreds of millions
Question: Why are there for more eligible social security numbers than there are citizens in the USA? As pointed out by Elon Musk, “This might be the biggest fraud in history.” There are tens of millions of people marked in social security at being “ALIVE” when they are definitely dead. This is a huge problem. As pointed out by Elon Musk, “Some of these people would have been alive before America existed as a country!”

SSA Helping Illegal Immigrants: In addition, a whistleblower who worked for the SSA came forward to report how SSA appeared to seek for illegal migrants to qualify for PERMANENT social security, meaning they would never have to work a day in their lives in America.

WHISTLEBLOWER: They were incentivized to qualify illegals for LONG TERM DISABILITY to qualify illegals for Social Security FOR LIFE, “So they were set for life” “They wanted us to try to identify them in such a way that they would qualify for long-term social security disability. Now long-term social security disability is for life. So if they get identified and qualify for long-term social security disability, they are as good as set up for life” “That doesn’t sound like a refugee to me. Just being honest, that sounds like someone who’s planning on staying here.” “So they instructed us to try to identify, to try to get the client, because once they arrive here, they’re now called clients. —So they told us that we needed to talk to the client and ask them if they had any headaches, recurring headaches, or any lower back problems, anything that would qualify them for Social Security Long Term Disability” “Yes, it is insanity. But in order to get Social Security disability benefits, don’t you need a Social Security number? Well, we were instructed in the meeting that one of the first things we were supposed to do was sign them up for Social Security.” “This is unbelievable. So they come over here and they get a Social Security number. Right. They become legal. Correct.”

United States Department of Agriculture

@DOGE_USDA United States Department of Agriculture
Claim: Supports American farmers, say the ensure food safety, and provides nutrition assistance to improve public health and rural economies.
Budget: $195.4 billion (2023)
Founded: 1862, under President Abraham Lincoln
Original Budget: $20,000
Adjusted to 2025: Approximately $500,000
Question: Are USDA programs truly supporting Americans? Look how the program, started in 1862, was intended to be one of the smallest, with an adjusted budget of only $500,000 by todays standards, but it has recklessly exploded to a 195 Billion budget!

National Aeronautics and Space Administration

@DOGE_NASA National Aeronautics and Space Administration
Claim: Advances space exploration and scientific discovery to inspire Americans and enhance technological innovation.
Budget: $25.4 billion (2023)
Founded: 1958, under President Dwight D. Eisenhower
Original Budget: $100 million
Adjusted to 2025: Roughly $1 billion
Question: Is NASA basing their new endeavors on merit?

Elon’s take on SpaceX hiring the most talented of people in the world, and also on the NASA Artemis Program. “The full answer here is complex. The outcome of any given company is the vector sum of the people within it. Improve the alignment of the individual vectors and their amplitude and the outcome will improve accordingly. Humans can be thought of as hardware (inherent talent) and software (education & training). Even if someone has a strong brain/hardware, if their training/software is bad, that can be very hard to reverse. As the saying goes, it is hard to teach old dogs new tricks. That said, talking in terms of specific companies, Boeing is on a much better track with the new CEO. The prior guy had no idea how airplanes or rockets worked. Just zero. Regarding space, the Artemis architecture is extremely inefficient, as it is a jobs-maximizing program, not a results-maximizing program. Something entirely new is needed.” Source: Elon on X

Department of Veterans Affairs

@DOGE_VA Department of Veterans Affairs
Claim: Delivers healthcare, benefits, and memorial services to honor and support America’s veterans.
Budget: $269.3 billion (2023)
Founded: 1930, under President Herbert Hoover
Original Budget: $186 million
Adjusted to 2025: Approximately $3.2 billion
Question: Are the VA’s services timely and of high quality, or do Veterans need a different type of care the VA is not offering?

Department of Transportation

@DOGE_DOT Department of Transportation
Claim: Builds and maintains a safe, efficient transportation system to connect Americans and drive economic growth.
Budget: $108.2 billion (2023)
Founded: 1966, under President Lyndon B. Johnson
Original Budget: $5.6 billion
Adjusted to 2025: About $48 billion
Question: Is the DOT effectively managing infrastructure projects to ensure they are of highest quality for safety and completed on time and within budget, or are there significant overruns and delays?

Environmental Protection Agency

@DOGE_EPA Environmental Protection Agency
Claim: Protects American health and environment by enforcing regulations on air, water, and land quality.
Budget: $9.6 billion (2023)
Founded: 1970, under President Richard Nixon
Original Budget: $1.7 billion
Adjusted to 2025: Roughly $12 billion
Question: Does the EPA’s regulatory approach balance environmental protection with economic impact, or is there a tilt towards either extreme?

Department of Defense

@DOGE_DOD Department of Defense
Claim: Defends the nation and its interests, ensuring the security of Americans through military strength and readiness.
Budget: $842 billion (2023)
Founded: 1947, under President Harry S. Truman
Original Budget: $13.1 billion
Adjusted to 2025: Approximately $175 billion
Question: Is the DoD’s spending on military designed to make America the strongest military in the world? On February 18, 2023, the Department of Defense Official Account of X posted: “Diversity is a strategic imperative critical to mission readiness and accomplishment. We were on site for the 2023 inaugural @DoD_ODEI Summit as DEIA experts led forums to advance the DEIA and DoD mission — because our people matter,” to which Elon Musk responded, “Your strategic imperative is defending the United States.” Soon, the Dept of Defense DEI account was deleted and no longer exists.

Food and Drug Administration

@DOGE_FDA Food and Drug Administration
Claim: Safeguards public health by ensuring the safety and efficacy of food, drugs, and medical products for Americans.
Budget: $6.6 billion (2023)
Founded: 1906, under President Theodore Roosevelt
Original Budget: Not separately documented, likely in the millions
Adjusted to 2025: Likely in the tens of millions
Question: Is the FDA keeping pace with the rapid innovation in medical devices, pharmaceuticals and food technology, or are there delays in approval processes that affect public health?

National Science Foundation

@DOGE_NSF National Science Foundation
Claim: Funds scientific research and education to advance innovation and knowledge for the benefit of all Americans.
Budget: $8.8 billion (2023)
Founded: 1950, under President Harry S. Truman
Original Budget: $3.5 million
Adjusted to 2025: Approximately $40 million
Question: Is it time for the NSF to sunset? Here’s just a few of the ways the National Science Foundation has used your tax dollars: As reported in The Daily Wire on February 10, 2025, the Senate Commerce Committee found that the National Science Foundation (NSF) allocated over $2 billion from January 2021 to April 2024 to “science” projects related to activism and critical race theory than genuine scientific inquiry. The committee found that 10% of grants in this period focused on themes like oppression, social or environmental justice, gender, or race, with the share of such grants surging from 0.29% in 2021 to 27% of new grants in 2024 under the Biden administration.

Specifically NSF-funded projects like “Reviewer Zero” ($500,000), labeled peer review racist, while $4.4 million was spent on a Columbia University effort to “decolonize geoscience,” and $1 million went to a study claiming physics is racist based on scant evidence.

While scientists now warn of research cuts under Trump, few protested when activist projects siphoned funds from fields like cancer research, per the Daily Wire report.

As of this morning, Trump announced that 168 employees would be laid off, 10 percent of the workforce, who were mostly working from home.

Note: All original budget amounts are adjusted for inflation to reflect approximate 2025 dollar values.

My thoughts

I personally think that many of these agencies have served their purpose and their doors should be shuttered. If the American taxpayers find out later, that an agency or a job was eliminated that they need back, we could go back and create that agency or job again. As it stands now, these agencies are costing us TRILLIONS of dollars, and we are unable to afford them any longer.

What is DOGE?

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, has achieved remarkable results by saving $160 billion through canceling inefficient contracts and selling assets, thereby optimizing taxpayer funds. It introduced innovative tech perspectives to drive government reform. DOGE promoted transparency via public access to unclassified records, while slashing bureaucracy for streamlined operations. Ultimately, it delivered voter-mandated reforms that boosted overall efficiency.
