During the excitement of delivering a speech at Donald Trump’s inauguration, Elon raised his arms in what he intended as a gesture of openness and goodwill. This narrative isn’t new; the comparison to Nazism, a tactic as old as the internet itself, has become a go-to for sensationalism, even in 2025.
Why Reducing Elon to a Caricature is Harmful
Why does this matter? When a man with a vision to “expand consciousness to the stars,” as Elon has stated, and who is aiming to better understand creation, is reduced to such a caricature, it’s not just about him. It’s about the degradation of discourse, where kindness and ambition are twisted into something sinister. This reaction from the legacy media and certain segments of society reflects a deeper issue: the inability or unwillingness to engage with complexity.
The Irony of Political Stances
The irony doesn’t stop there. Some of Elon’s critics, who label him a Nazi, are themselves supporters of groups like Hamas, a recognized terrorist organization responsible for the tragedy on October 7th. This selective outrage highlights a troubling hypocrisy where historical atrocities are invoked without regard for context or consistency.

In light of these events, it’s crucial to cultivate a culture of critical thinking, where we challenge sensationalist narratives and where we seek understanding beyond the headlines. Elon Musk’s gesture, meant to convey empathy, was misinterpreted by those looking through a biased lens. I advocate, especially, for schools to encourage critical thinking in kids of all ages, starting with the very young. My own kids are now adults, and I spent a good amount of time challenging their thinking when I was raising them, and now they are grown adults, and the other day, one of them asked me: “Mom how did you teach me to critically think? I want to make certain the kids I have one day will have that too, please explain to me what you did.”

As we move forward, let’s strive for a world that is less about vilification of leaders and innovators like Elon Musk, and more about understanding and supporting. Visionary leaders like Elon Musk should never be reduced to caricatures but they should be seen for their contributions to humanity’s future. Let’s remember that in 2025, we’re capable of more than just rehashing old tropes; we can aim for creativity, nuance, and perhaps, a bit of the kindness that Elon Musk’s gesture was meant to convey.
